This season Christopher Bailey side-kicked the traditional yet expected tailored trench coats and instead, delivered an energetic collection on Monday at the Burberry Prorsum show in Hyde Park. To paint the scenery for you in one word—next summer will be BRIGHT, shimmering with accents of metallics.
This season, A-list celebrities and members of the press entered in a darker-than-usual venue, but as the show started with Tom’s Odell song “Another Love”, a ray of light cast across the runway and the dark walls faded away showcasing London’s skyline in the background. Everything happened in a perfect crescendo at Burberry: the music, the light, the shapes and colors. The spring summer 2013 collection debuted with neutral colors and ended with an explosion of colors—a visual kaleidoscope.
For the first time, Bailey introduced the Cape Trench and played around with different types of shapes and volume, which was this collection’s forte, along with his corseted tops and short shorts. Not only was it refreshing to see new materials and fabrics such as double cotton sateen and lashings of metallic silk and plastic, but the collection as a whole felt extremely glamorous, sophisticated yet wearable.
In addition to oversized coats and capes, the Burberry Prorsum trench coat received a revamp, adorned with lace and feathers—believe it or not this made Anna Wintour smile (I witnessed it). In turn, I had a huge crush on the cobalt wedge pumps and the color-block coat in lipstick red and fuchsia.
And, because the Burberry house never fails to impress with a grandiose finale, the models each wore a trench coat in a single color creating a rainbow, ombré effect as they walked down the runway. Another colorful visual experience! Hats off!
